Chapter One
―What‘s this?‖
―Nothing.‖ Bryce jerked the elegantly addressed, bright pink envelope out of
his friend‘s hand so quickly Bryce gave Stanley a paper cut, leaving him glaring and
sucking on his finger. He tried to smooth it over with an explanation—―It‘s just an
invitation from Joe.‖—and immediately knew he‘d said the wrong thing, because
Stanley perked up considerably.
―Aunt Tacky? Really? God, she is so cool.‖
―Riiight.‖
Maybe in Stanley’s theatrical world of hot lights, grease makeup, and
a scripted, pretend world, my
flaming
uncle might be considered cool. Not
my
world
.
―My uncle Joe dresses up in women‘s clothes and makes fun of people for a living.‖
―It‘s called satire. God, I could learn so much from
her
. I wish
she
were my
aunt
. The most exciting thing that ever happens in my family is a bar mitzvah; do
you remember my bar mitzvah?‖
They both laughed because Stanley‘s bar mitzvah was by far the most boring
event in either of their lives.
―Seriously, your
aunt
is so awesome. The other day I saw her name on the
billboard of Renard‘s.‖ Stanley overpronounced the theater name with a very nasal
French accent before asking, ―Did you know she‘s performing there?‖
―I do not keep track of my
uncle’s
performance schedule. And what were you
doing driving by a gay bar?‖
―The road runs right by it,‖ Stanley offered smartly. ―I wonder what she‘s
doing there?‖
